## Who they are

Mirèio is Ramoun's cherished only child, raised among hay-carts and silk-worms on the Lotus Farm, courted by wealthy herders who see her as a prize. What she wants instead is the barefoot basket-weaver Vincen, a love her father's pride would never permit. Her stubborn fidelity to that choice sets the poem's whole machinery of gossip, courtship, and grief in motion.
