> Midwinter by John Buchan

## Answer

Midwinter by John Buchan develops Class and Social Hierarchy across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The story examines class distinctions through characters like the ragged Highlanders, the genteel Duchess, and the scholarly Johnson, revealing tensions between birth, wealth, and merit.

The opulent setting of Cornbury and the contrast between the Scottish Highlands and English aristocracy highlight class differences.

Johnson's shabby appearance and lowly status as a tutor are contrasted with the aristocratic company, yet his moral earnestness earns Alastair's respect.

The crowd at the inn includes various social classes, and the conflict between the recruits and their officers highlights class tensions.
