## Who they are

General Oglethorpe arrives at the Sleeping Deer with his regiment billeted at Marlock and his route to Hull proclaimed to every old woman on Trent side, yet his true business stays sealed behind iron courtesy. He eats and drinks enormously without loosening his tongue, and his aquiline calm makes him a serious antagonist by hand or brain. His meeting with Sir John Norreys in the Brown Room draws Alastair into a game of watchfulness where every civility may be a feint.
