# Lady Apafi — ’Midst the Wild Carpathians character guide

> Lady Apafi in ’Midst the Wild Carpathians by Mór Jókai.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Apafi

**First appearance:** 0005-iii-a-prince-in-his-own-despite

## Snapshot

Apafi's devoted wife, whose terror at his summons by the Turks and whose childbed deliverance bind the prince's private fears to Transylvania's public fate.

## Who they are

Lady Apafi clings to her husband as he girds on his sword to answer Ali Pasha's summons, her lamentations betraying how deeply she dreads the Turkish world that holds their future. Her fear is answered almost at once by the birth of a son, a piece of good news that lifts Apafi's despair and reframes his captors as suddenly tolerable. She matters because her vulnerability and her child make the prince's political captivity feel like a domestic wound, anchoring the novel's early stakes in love rather than statecraft.
