## Snapshot

The Ottoman governor of Grosswardein, whose warning letter to Beldi reveals that the Sultan's patience with Banfi has run out.

## Who they are

Ali Pasha watches Transylvania's internal quarrels from across the border with the patient menace of a man who knows the Sultan's armies stand ready. His message, carried by his son Feriz Beg, lays out the stakes with brutal clarity: chastise Banfi or watch the realm become a Turkish pachalic. Though he never appears in person, his warning sets the novel's political clock ticking and forces Beldi to confront the great lord he had hoped to forget.
