Theseus arrives at the Lapith wedding not as a conqueror but as a guest, bound to Pirithous by a friendship he declares makes them two men in one. When the centaur Eurytus seizes the bride, Theseus is first to rise, hurling a goblet at the ravisher's skull and sparking a melee where sacred vessels become weapons.
