## Who they are

Medusa is the monster at the center of Perseus's most famous labor: a winged horror whose look turns flesh to stone, surrounded by the frozen bodies of those who tried to reach her. Ovid gives her a backstory the older myths don't — she was a beautiful priestess violated in Minerva's temple, and the snakes were the goddess's revenge on the victim, not the crime. That reframing makes her the poem's most unsettling figure: a woman punished twice, then killed for the punishment.
