## Who they are

Ceyx rules Trachis and loves his wife Alcyone deeply, yet his anxiety over a prophecy drives him to sea despite her foreboding dreams. When the storm breaks his ship, he drowns calling her name, and his body drifts until the gods take pity. His devotion and his fatal restlessness set up one of the poem's tenderest reunions, where grief itself becomes a kind of metamorphosis.
