Chapter 1
Melmoth the Wanderer
The chapter introduces the character of John Melmoth, who is summoned to the deathbed of his miserly uncle, Old Melmoth. After the uncle's death, John discovers a mysterious portrait and a manuscript that hint at the legend of Melmoth the Wanderer, a figure who has supposedly made a pact with the devil.
Chapter 2

John Melmoth, a poor student at Trinity College Dublin, is summoned to the deathbed of his wealthy but miserly uncle. The journey and his arrival trigger painful memories of his dependent childhood and his father's dying wish that he look to his uncle. At the Lodge, he finds his uncle in a state of avaricious delirium, suspicious of everyone. Old Melmoth sends John into a forbidden closet to fetch wine, where John discovers a haunting portrait dated 1646 with eyes that seem alive. Later, as his uncle dies cursing over small sums, John sees a figure at the door—the living original of the portrait—which beckons to him before disappearing.

After the funeral, John Melmoth is named sole heir to his uncle's estate. A strange codicil in the will instructs him to destroy a portrait and burn a manuscript. Driven by curiosity, John remains in the house, questions the servants about his uncle's odd behavior, and resolves to examine the manuscript at night. He retrieves it from the closet and begins to read, despite the eerie atmosphere.

Young John Melmoth reads the remainder of Stanton's manuscript, which details Stanton's obsessive pursuit of Melmoth the Wanderer, their final meeting in a madhouse, and the temptations and horrors Stanton endured. After finishing, Melmoth tears and burns the portrait of his ancestor as instructed, but later experiences a terrifying vision of the figure appearing to him.
Chapter 5

During a violent storm, John Melmoth hears a distress signal from a shipwreck and rushes to the shore with others to attempt a rescue. Amid the chaos, he spots a mysterious, unmoved figure on the rocks who laughs at the suffering, reminding him of Stanton's encounter with the Wanderer. Melmoth tries to climb toward the figure but falls into the sea, later waking in bed believing it was a dream.
