An old, experienced lord kept on as Angelo's second, whose instinct for mercy keeps colliding with the deputy's appetite for severity.

## Who they are

The Duke names Escalus 'first in question' but places him beneath Angelo, and Escalus accepts the demotion with the patience of a man who knows his own worth. When Angelo insists on enforcing the letter of the law, Escalus argues for cutting a little rather than bruising to death — a tempering voice that goes largely unheard. He represents the older, gentler administration the Duke is quietly abandoning, and his presence makes Angelo's rigor look like what it is: a choice, not a necessity.
