# Antonie van Leeuwenhoek — Master Flea character guide

> Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in Master Flea by E. T. A. Hoffmann.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Leeuwenhoek, my good Leeuwenhoek, the abominable Leeuwenhoek, Mr. Leeuwenhoek, wretched Leeuwenhoek

**First appearance:** 0000-i-first-adventure

## Snapshot

The celebrated microscopist turned flea-tamer, whose dazzling spectacles depend entirely on a captive Master Flea he can no longer command.

## Who they are

Leeuwenhoek has built a career on showing cultivated fleas to paying audiences, dressing them as soldiers and statesmen and pocketing the proceeds. When his vassals desert him mid-performance and his tricks collapse into peppercorns, he turns to Pepusch in genuine terror, confessing that without the Master he is a lost man. His brittle vanity and his refusal to heed warnings make him the story's cautionary figure: a scientist whose wonders rest on cruelty and borrowed power.
