She is unmarried, watchful, and quietly opinionated, and Mamma and Papa are a little afraid of what she might put into Mary's head. Her presence shows Mary a woman who can hold her own without raising her voice. ## Relationships ### [Mamma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mamma) _family_ Lavinia, as the eldest daughter, is both a helper and a rival to Mamma, with a complex dynamic of duty, jealousy, and shared domestic burdens. ### [Mary Olivier](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mary_olivier) _family_ Lavinia and Mary share a sisterly bond of mutual support and understanding, but also friction from Lavinia's conventionality and Mary's independence. ### [Uncle Victor](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/uncle_victor) _family_ Lavinia has a close, affectionate relationship with Uncle Victor, who serves as a confidant and a source of intellectual stimulation in the household. ### [Mark Olivier](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mark_olivier) _family_ Lavinia and Mark have a sibling relationship marked by mutual respect but also rivalry for Mamma's attention and differing life paths. ### [Uncle Victor](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/uncle_victor) _family_ Lavinia has a close, affectionate relationship with Uncle Victor, who serves as a confidant and a source of intellectual stimulation in the household. ### [Mamma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mamma) _family_ Lavinia, as the eldest daughter, is both a helper and a rival to Mamma, with a complex dynamic of duty, jealousy, and shared domestic burdens. ### [Mamma](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mamma) _family_ Lavinia, as the eldest daughter, is both a helper and a rival to Mamma, with a complex dynamic of duty, jealousy, and shared domestic burdens. ### [Mary Olivier](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mary_olivier) _family_ Lavinia and Mary share a sisterly bond of mutual support and understanding, but also friction from Lavinia's conventionality and Mary's independence. ### [Mary Olivier](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mary_olivier) _family_ Lavinia and Mary share a sisterly bond of mutual support and understanding, but also friction from Lavinia's conventionality and Mary's independence. ### [Mark Olivier](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mark_olivier) _family_ Lavinia and Mark have a sibling relationship marked by mutual respect but also rivalry for Mamma's attention and differing life paths. ### [Mark Olivier](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/mark_olivier) _family_ Lavinia and Mark have a sibling relationship marked by mutual respect but also rivalry for Mamma's attention and differing life paths. ### [Uncle Victor](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/characters/uncle_victor) _family_ Lavinia has a close, affectionate relationship with Uncle Victor, who serves as a confidant and a source of intellectual stimulation in the household. ## In the story ### [Chapter V](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/chapters/chapter-v) Arrives with her 'Opinions' left at home, engages in a playful conversation with Mary, and is a source of tension for Mamma. ### [Chapter VI](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/chapters/chapter-vi) Aunt Lavvy joins the trip to the cemetery and comments on Aunt Charlotte's absence, showing a practical and somewhat detached demeanor. ### [Chapter X](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/chapters/chapter-x) Aunt Lavvy is present and cautious about discussing religion, honoring her promise to Mamma. ### [Chapter XIII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/chapters/chapter-xiii) Aunt Lavvy visits, bringing her Unitarian beliefs and causing family tension, but she also provides a model of religious defiance. ### [Chapter IV](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/chapters/chapter-iv) Present at the party, sits beside Dan and tries to comfort him. ### [Chapter XIX](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/mary_olivier_a_life_se/chapters/chapter-xix) Now sits in Mamma's place at the tea-table, caring for Aunt Charlotte;
