## Who they are

Anthony Chuzzlewit is the wealthy, skinflint brother of old Martin, running a counting-house with his son Jonas and treating the younger man as both servant and suspect. Their mutual distrust is the family's true inheritance: Anthony hoards, Jonas covets, and each watches the other with the wariness of rival predators. His suspicious death early in the novel detonates the plot's central question of guilt and inheritance, turning Jonas from a petty schemer into a figure of genuine menace.
