# Eutrope Gagnon — Maria Chapdelaine character guide

> Eutrope Gagnon in Maria Chapdelaine by Louis Hémon.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Eutrope

**First appearance:** 0003-iv-wild-land

## Snapshot

A shy, steady neighbor whose patient devotion to Maria embodies the quiet, rooted life of the parish — and the honest grief he must sometimes carry.

## Who they are

Eutrope comes to the Chapdelaine door on New Year's Day, too timid even to claim the customary kiss, his eyes on the floor while his heart is plainly elsewhere. He is the suitor who stays, works the land, and measures love in visits and silences rather than grand gestures. When he must bring the household terrible news, his halting, shaped-beforehand words reveal a man caught between honesty and the pain his honesty will cause the woman he quietly wants.
