## Who they are

Lady Bertram presides over Mansfield Park chiefly as a warm, motionless presence, leaving the rearing of her children and the management of the household to her husband and her busy sister, Mrs. Norris. Her easy temper and total want of exertion are comic, but they also mean her children grow up without a steady maternal hand, and her niece Fanny is left to fend for herself.
