Concepts
Ideas that structure Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Urban Alienation
The city of New York is depicted as a dehumanizing, overwhelming machine that isolates individuals, as seen in the crush of the ferry crowd, the lonely rooms, and the mechanical rhythms of trains and traffic that dominate characters' lives.
American Dream and Ambition
Characters pursue success, money, and status—like Bud seeking 'the center of things' or Thatcher dreaming of wealth—but the narrative reveals the emptiness, corruption, and disillusionment that often accompany these pursuits.
Social Class and Inequality
The book contrasts the lives of the wealthy (Goldweiser, Baldwin) with the poor and struggling (Bud, the Italian immigrant, the old man on the stoop), highlighting the vast divides and the brutal struggle for survival in the metropolis.
Love and Marriage
Romantic relationships and marriages are portrayed as fraught with disappointment, manipulation, and transactional motives—Ellen's divorce, Baldwin's pursuit, and the suffocating marriage of John and Elaine all illustrate failed or hollow connections.
Identity and Self-Destruction
Characters grapple with fragmented identities and self-destructive tendencies, such as Stan's reckless drinking, Harland's descent into alcoholism, and Ellen's numbness, reflecting a loss of purpose and inner turmoil.
Modernity and Technology
The novel emphasizes the impact of modern technology—skyscrapers, subways, ferries, telephones, and cars—as both awe-inspiring and oppressive, shaping human experience and accelerating the pace of life.
War and Violence
World War I and urban violence (murders, fires, strikes) permeate the narrative, with war depicted as a distant but consuming force that disrupts lives, while street-level violence reflects the city's raw brutality.
Illusion and Performance
Many characters engage in theatrical roles or self-deception—Ellen as an actress, Baldwin's legal posturing, the 'Black Hand' sensationalism—suggesting that life in New York is a constant performance masking inner emptiness.
