## Who they are

Dr. Herbert Warner is the solid, slightly complacent physician whose telegram summons Dr. Pym and whose sober presence lends authority to the accusations against Innocent Smith. He is bewildered by the events at Beacon House but clings to procedure and expertise, trusting the criminologist's file over his own impressions of the man. His well-meaning certainty becomes a foil to the novel's insistence that facts and documents may not tell the whole truth about a human being.
