# Julius Delamayn — Man and Wife character guide > Julius Delamayn in Man and Wife by Wilkie Collins. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Mr. Julius Delamayn, Julius **First appearance:** 0001-prologue-the-irish-marriage ## Snapshot Geoffrey's younger brother Julius is a scholarly, courteous man whose quiet decency throws his brother's brutality into relief at every family gathering. ## Who they are Julius Delamayn belongs to the same landed family as Geoffrey but shares none of his appetites, preferring books, travel, and measured conversation to sport and drink. His mild interventions in family affairs carry a moral weight his brother cannot match, and his presence quietly raises the question of what the Delamayn name actually stands for. Where Geoffrey takes, Julius considers — and that contrast shapes how the reader judges every choice the family makes. ## Relationships ### [Anne Silvester](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/characters/anne_silvester) _friendship_ Julius, Geoffrey's brother, is kind and sympathetic to Anne, offering her genuine support. ### [Geoffrey Delamayn](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/characters/geoffrey_delamayn) _family_ Geoffrey and Julius are brothers, but Geoffrey treats Julius with contempt and rivalry. ### [Geoffrey Delamayn](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/characters/geoffrey_delamayn) _family_ Geoffrey and Julius are brothers, but Geoffrey treats Julius with contempt and rivalry. ### [Anne Silvester](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/characters/anne_silvester) _friendship_ Julius, Geoffrey's brother, is kind and sympathetic to Anne, offering her genuine support. ### [Anne Silvester](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/characters/anne_silvester) _friendship_ Julius, Geoffrey's brother, is kind and sympathetic to Anne, offering her genuine support. ### [Geoffrey Delamayn](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/characters/geoffrey_delamayn) _family_ Geoffrey and Julius are brothers, but Geoffrey treats Julius with contempt and rivalry. ## In the story ### [The Villa at Hampstead](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/chapters/i-the-villa-at-hampstead) The lawyer present who declares the marriage certificate 'waste paper,' confirming Mr. Vanborough's legal denial. ### [Chapter II](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/chapters/ii) Arrives at the end of the chapter as the lawyer Vanborough has summoned; Mr. Kendrew expresses a dislike for him. ### [Chapter IV](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/chapters/iv) Mr. Vanborough's lawyer; declares the marriage certificate to be 'waste paper' and states that Vanborough is not legally married. ### [Chapter VII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/chapters/vii) Mentioned as one of the sons of Mr. Delamayn, at college when their father rises to prominence. ### [XIV: Geoffrey as a Letter-Writer](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/chapters/xiv-geoffrey-as-a-letter-writer) Arrives from Scotland; tries to persuade Geoffrey to stay and see their mother; is left unnoticed by the servants. ### [Geoffrey in the Marriage Market](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/chapters/xv-geoffrey-in-the-marriage-market) Visits his father Lord Holchester at his bedside; conveys Geoffrey's situation and secures a conditional chance for reconciliation. ### [Geoffrey as a Public Character](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/man_and_wife_se/chapters/xvi-geoffrey-as-a-public-character) Julius, Geoffrey's elder brother, delivers the family's proposal for Geoffrey to marry Mrs. Glenarm.
