Wambe commands the Matuku people from a kraal ringed by a stockade of elephant tusks, wielding cruelty as statecraft against enemies and even his own household. His pursuit of the runaway Maiwa and the white hunter who shelters her sets the campaign against him in motion, while his long abuse of the captive John Every gives the hunters a personal stake in his downfall. Cowardly at the core despite his bluster, he is the moral weight the whole expedition is measured against.
