# Nala — Maiwa’s Revenge character guide

> Nala in Maiwa’s Revenge by H. Rider Haggard.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0001-maiwa-s-revenge

## Snapshot

A Matuku chief who shelters Maiwa, stages a careful diplomatic performance for Wambe's heralds, and then commits his impi to war.

## Who they are

Nala receives Wambe's messengers with elaborate show, pretending to consult his Indunas and to yield to the tyrant's demands while secretly planning defiance. His alliance with Quatermain is transactional — the ivory stockade is the price of his cooperation — but it is also a calculated stand against a chief who has long bullied his neighbours. His impi, and his willingness to spare the wounded, define the moral character of the campaign.
