# Montgomery Brent — Magnificent Obsession character guide

> Montgomery Brent in Magnificent Obsession by Lloyd C. Douglas.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Montgomery, Monty, Brent, Mr. Brent

**First appearance:** 0002-i

## Snapshot

A cynical, sharp-tongued observer whose brush with death and disappointment turns him into an unwilling seeker of meaning.

## Who they are

Montgomery Brent has spent a lifetime dismissing ideals, conversions, and grand renunciations as sentimental nonsense, until a coincidence involving a lake and a lost life shakes his composure. He approaches Hudson's coded journal expecting revelation and finds only what looks to him like the ramblings of a crank, a discovery that wounds him more than he will admit. His disillusionment and reluctant hope make him a mirror for the novel's central question of whether a life can truly be remade.
