## Who they are

Stephen Mackaye shared food, blanket, and hardship with the narrator — nursing through typhoid, starving on the Stewart, saving a life on the Little Salmon — before turning out in a way the narrator cannot forgive. The wound is personal and absolute: a man trusted more than a brother has become the measure of all disloyalty. Their partnership began in the 1897 Klondike rush, and it was together they bought the dog Spot, whose strange intelligence and stubborn idleness would test them both.
