## Who they are

Bought for a hundred and ten dollars during the Chilcoot freeze-up, Spot looks like the finest sled animal in Alaska — until work begins, when his intelligence seems to dribble out of him. He has an instinct for divining when labor is coming and making a sneak accordingly, and his eyes hold a shine the narrator can only call beyond words. Whether he is stupid or too wise to work is the question that haunts his owners, and the answer shapes everything that follows.
