## Who they are

Klakee-Nah is the aging master of the large house at Tana-naw Station, surrounded by old comrades, frostbitten sailors, and the four rheumy-eyed slaves of his youth. He faces death as he lived — at a wild table of jokes and stories, refusing tears — and his choice to summon Porportuk in his final hours sets the household's future in motion. His artist-spirited daughter El-Soo understands better than anyone that he should die as he lived.
