## Who they are

Churchill is one of a party of stampeders racing to catch the Athenian before she sails from Dyea, but when their canoe is swamped and they miss the Flora, he refuses to accept the loss. Soaked, frozen, and running on nothing, he drives himself and the exhausted Antonsen through a driving snow-squall to overhaul the steamer and demand it turn back. His stubborn loyalty to the men stranded behind him—and his willingness to hold an ocean liner for their sake—sets the moral stakes of the story.
