## Who they are

Akoon is a hunter and former pilot who abandoned twenty-dollar-a-day work on the big steamboats the moment he saw El-Soo at Klakee-Nah's large house. He measures himself against other men and finds favor in her eyes, while Porportuk grins and advances more money for the household. At Klakee-Nah's death feast, Akoon tells a story that makes the rafters echo, his warmth and ardor set against the cold accounting of the man who pays for the wine.
