Chapter 4
I
Lord Anthony Dewhurst carries the dead body of the Duc de Kernogan through the streets of Nantes, obeying the orders of Sir Percy Blakeney and the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. After burying the duke in consecrated ground with the help of Jean-Marie, the old coachman, Tony reunites with Yvonne and Percy. Sir Percy, disguised as the proconsul Carrier, orchestrates their escape from Nantes, heading for Le Croisic and the Daydream.

II
Yvonne recounts her harrowing escape through the streets of the Isle Feydeau with the Scarlet Pimpernel, describing how he disguised her in boy's clothes and they evaded their pursuers. Lord Tony interrupts her story with a kiss.
