Concepts
Ideas that structure Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and Other Stories by Oscar Wilde — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Duty and Morality
Lord Arthur's central conflict revolves around his perceived duty to commit murder before marrying, treating a palm reader's prophecy as a moral obligation that must be fulfilled for the sake of love and honor.
Fate vs. Free Will
The narrative explores whether individuals are puppets of destiny or agents of their own choices, as Lord Arthur attempts to control his fate by acting on a deterministic prophecy.
Appearance vs. Reality
The stories repeatedly contrast surface beauty and social polish with hidden truths, such as Lady Windermere's indiscretions masking innocence, or the beggar model's true identity in 'The Model Millionaire.'
Art and Aesthetics
Wilde examines the relationship between art, truth, and forgery, particularly in 'The Portrait of Mr. W. H.,' where a theory about Shakespeare's sonnets leads to a fabricated artwork and tragic consequences.
Social Class and Wealth
The stories satirize the idle rich and their preoccupations, contrasting the luxury of aristocratic life with the poverty of beggars and the practical struggles of the lower classes.
Love and Sacrifice
Lord Arthur's willingness to commit murder for Sybil's sake, and his secret self-sacrifice, highlight the theme of love as a driving force that justifies extreme actions.
The Supernatural and the Rational
The clash between supernatural beliefs (palmistry, ghosts) and rational, practical responses is central, as seen in Lord Arthur's literal interpretation of a prophecy and Mr. Otis's scientific approach to the Canterville ghost.
Irony and Absurdity
Wilde employs dark irony and absurd situations, such as Lord Arthur's failed murder attempts and the comedic treatment of a ghost being outwitted by modern American pragmatism.
