## Snapshot

Eliza's domineering brother, a self-made businessman whose wealth and hard practicality embody the Pentland clan's strange mix of greed and sentiment.

## Who they are

Will Pentland is the prosperous, overbearing patriarch of the Pentland family, a man who has turned shrewdness into a fortune and expects the world to defer to his judgment. He embodies the clan's contradictions: ruthless in business, sentimental about blood, generous and stingy by turns. His presence at family gatherings, weddings, and funerals reminds Eugene of the inescapable inheritance of Pentland blood, with its vitality, its meanness, and its taint.
