Family Obligation and Social Conformity
Laura is pressured to conform to familial roles—as a dutiful sister, aunt, and spinster—with her brother Henry and sister-in-law Caroline managing her life, reflecting the limited options for unmarried women in early 20th-century England.
The Search for Identity
Laura's journey from a passive, accommodating 'Aunt Lolly' to a self-aware woman who rejects societal labels is central; her move to the country and pact with the devil symbolize her quest to discover and assert her true self.
Rebellion Against Patriarchy
Laura's embrace of witchcraft is a direct rebellion against patriarchal control, as she rejects the roles of wife, mother, and dependent relative, choosing instead a subversive path that grants her freedom and power.
Alienation and Disquiet
Laura experiences a recurring autumnal restlessness and sense of unease, feeling alienated from her London life and family; this disquiet drives her toward the wild, lonely places that promise a more authentic existence.

The narrative juxtaposes the mundane routines of domestic life—shopping, family visits, household management—with Laura's extraordinary inner world and eventual supernatural pact, suggesting that true liberation lies beyond conventional reality.
