> Sallie Gardiner in Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Sallie, Sallie Moffat, Miss Sallie

**First appearance:** 0010-part-i-ix-meg-goes-to-vanity-fair

## Snapshot

Meg's charming, well-connected friend who opens the door to fashionable society, only to reveal how casually that world can wound an innocent heart.

## Who they are

Sallie Gardiner moves easily through the parties and parlors that Meg March can only dream of, and her invitation to the Moffat gathering becomes Meg's first real taste of luxury and its discontents. Through Sallie's social circle, Meg overhears the gossip that shatters her innocent friendship with Laurie and plants seeds of dissatisfaction with her family's poverty. Sallie herself remains largely oblivious to the damage her world inflicts, making her a perfect emblem of how thoughtless privilege operates—not through malice, but through careless talk that changes everything for the listener.
