# Aunt March — Little Women character guide

> Aunt March in Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** March, Aunt

**First appearance:** 0001-little-women

## Snapshot

The wealthy, cane-rapping March aunt who lectures, threatens disinheritance, and possesses a genius for rousing the spirit of opposition in gentle girls.

## Who they are

Aunt March hobbles into the March household with opinions, money, and a talent for meddling, insisting Meg marry well and help the family rather than throw herself away on a penniless tutor. She wields her fortune like a weapon—'not one penny of my money ever goes to you'—and yet her interference is precisely what stiffens Meg's resolve to marry John. Crotchety, imperious, and secretly sentimental, she embodies the worldly pressure against which the sisters' choices are measured.
