  1. Chapter 1

    I

Victor Grego, head of the Zarathustra Company, deals with a call from Leonard Kellogg about concerns over the Big Blackwater project's ecological impact and a naturalist named Rainsford. Meanwhile, Jack Holloway prospects for sunstones in a gorge, finding one worthless, and encounters a land-prawn. The chapter establishes the corporate and colonial setting on Zarathustra.

  2. Chapter 2

    II

Jack Holloway returns to his camp and discovers a small, golden-furred creature he names 'Little Fuzzy' in his shower. He feeds it, observes its intelligent behavior—including using tools, learning to clean up after itself, and reasoning about a screw cap—and contacts his friend Ben Rainsford to report the discovery. Little Fuzzy also demonstrates protective instincts by killing a land-prawn that entered the hut.

  3. Chapter 3

    Chapter III

Jack Holloway continues to bond with the Fuzzies, trading their artifacts and observing their tool use. He kills a damnthing after Little Fuzzy warns him, and later hosts Constabulary officers Lunt and Khadra, who witness the Fuzzies' intelligence and tool-making abilities. The conversation turns to the legal definition of sapience, with Holloway arguing that the Fuzzies' communication and tool use may qualify them as sapient beings.

  4. Chapter 4

    IV

Jack Holloway introduces Ben Rainsford to the Fuzzies, and they record a tape of the discovery. Rainsford contacts Juan Jimenez at the Company science division, who expresses interest and plans to visit with Gerd van Riebeek and Ruth Ortheris. Holloway insists the Fuzzies be treated with respect, not as laboratory animals.

  5. Chapter 5

    V

Leonard Kellogg and Ernst Mallin discuss the possibility that the Fuzzies are sapient, with Mallin suggesting that Rainsford and Holloway may be perpetrating a hoax. They plan to analyze Holloway's tape and conduct a study to debunk the claims. Meanwhile, at Holloway's camp, the Fuzzies play with a molecule-model kit, showing artistic and engineering skills. Victor Grego realizes the catastrophic implications for the Company if the Fuzzies are sapient, as it would void their charter, and he tasks Kellogg with taking charge of the investigation to control the narrative.
