Concepts
Ideas that structure Little Caesar by W. R. Burnett — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Crime and Consequence
The narrative follows the rise and fall of gangster Rico and his associates, showing how criminal actions inevitably lead to violence, betrayal, and downfall, as seen in the murders, arrests, and executions that punctuate the story.
Power and Ambition
Rico's relentless drive for power and control drives the plot, from his takeover of the Vettori gang to his eventual exile, highlighting how ambition both elevates and destroys him.
Loyalty and Betrayal
The underworld is defined by shifting loyalties, as characters like Joe Massara turn state's evidence, Little Arnie double-crosses Rico, and informants like Scabby play dangerous games, underscoring the fragility of trust.
Masculinity and Violence
The gangsters equate manhood with toughness, gunplay, and emotional coldness; Rico's disdain for Joe's dancing and his own self-discipline reflect a code where violence is a measure of worth.
Immigrant Experience
Set in Little Italy, the book portrays Italian-American characters navigating poverty, crime, and assimilation, with cultural markers like food, language, and family ties shaping their identities.
Fate and Inevitability
The novel's epigraph from Machiavelli and the characters' frequent reflections on luck and doom suggest a fatalistic worldview, where past actions and the criminal life lead inexorably to ruin.
Class and Social Mobility
Rico's rise from a poor yegg to a gang leader who dines with the 'Big Boy' illustrates the pursuit of wealth and status, yet his fall shows the limits of upward mobility outside legitimate society.
Fear and Paranoia
Characters like Tony and Sam Vettori are consumed by fear of arrest, betrayal, or death, leading to sleeplessness, illness, and desperate decisions, highlighting the psychological toll of criminal life.
