## Who they are

Mr. Vane narrates his own bewildering passage from an ordinary library into a country of talking beasts, ancient fathers, and moral consequence. His self-confidence curdles into guilt as he takes custody of Lilith, offering her food she refuses and dragging her toward a judgment he has no right to pronounce. His halting humility — begging Eve for a couch beside his dead — is the hinge on which the story's middle turns.
