# How does Liberalism develop the theme of Freedom of Thought and Expression?

> Liberalism by L. T. Hobhouse

## Answer

Liberalism by L. T. Hobhouse develops Freedom of Thought and Expression across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Emphasizes the necessity of intellectual and religious liberty for social progress, arguing that truth emerges through open discussion and that coercion in matters of belief destroys the very foundation of personal and societal growth.

The chapter delves into liberty of thought, speech, writing, and peaceable discussion as foundational to personal liberty, while noting the difficulty in drawing the line between speech and action.

Implicitly, the opposition to force and armaments protects the conditions for free thought and expression by preventing the military spirit from eroding free institutions.

Discusses the Liberal approach to error and truth, advocating for fair hearing and patient refutation rather than suppression, applying the wisdom of Gamaliel.
