# Páshenka — The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories character guide

> Páshenka in The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories by Leo Tolstoy.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0069-father-sergius

## Snapshot

A plain, unremarkable woman from Father Sergius's past whose ordinary goodness quietly exposes the vanity of his spiritual ambition.

## Who they are

Páshenka belongs to the world of modest households, small duties, and unglamorous kindness that Father Sergius left behind in his pursuit of holiness. She remembers him as he was, not as he has styled himself, and her simple, unpretentious life offers a rebuke to his theatrical asceticism. Her presence in the story forces the question of whether sanctity is found in spectacular renunciation or in the unnoticed faithfulness of ordinary people.
