> Márya in The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories by Leo Tolstoy.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Márya Ivánovna

**First appearance:** 0012-family-happiness

## Snapshot

A young woman who narrates her own courtship and marriage, discovering how love changes shape as the years pass.

## Who they are

Márya begins as a girl on the edge of adulthood, watching her older sister's marriage and wondering what her own will be. When she falls in love and marries, she finds that the intense happiness of early days gives way to something quieter, more complicated, and harder to name. Her voice carries the story's central question: whether love can survive the loss of its first, dazzling form.
