# Adjutant Kaloúgin — The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories character guide

> Adjutant Kaloúgin in The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories by Leo Tolstoy.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Kaloúgin

**First appearance:** 0004-sevastopol

## Snapshot

A Guards officer who craves the Tsar's approving glance, Kaloúgin pursues perfection in everything from French to chess, as if praise could fill an inner void.

## Who they are

Kaloúgin moves through the Sevastopol sketches as a polished staff officer whose charm and ambition mask a restless need for recognition. His devotion to Nicholas I borders on the rapturous, yet the same hunger that drives him to master every skill also leaves him perpetually unsatisfied, always chasing the next triumph. He matters because his striving embodies the vanity and self-deception that Tolstoy quietly indicts in the officer class.
