## Snapshot

A respected high-court judge whose carefully ordered life unravels when a strange illness forces him to confront what his existence has actually meant.

## Who they are

Ivan Ilyitch has spent his career climbing the judicial ladder, marrying well, and furnishing his drawing-room exactly as society prescribes. When illness strikes, he discovers that his wife and colleagues treat his suffering as an inconvenience, and the doctor's bedside manner mirrors his own former indifference to prisoners. His growing isolation and rage at the pretense surrounding him drive the story's central question: whether a life lived for propriety can hold any meaning at the end.
