# Gerasim — The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories character guide

> Gerasim in The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories by Leo Tolstoy.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0056-the-death-of-ivan-ilyitch

## Snapshot

A cheerful, strong peasant servant whose unforced kindness to the dying Ivan Ilyich shames the polished indifference of his social betters.

## Who they are

Gerasim is the young manservant assigned to the most unpleasant duties of Ivan Ilyich's illness, and he performs them with a lightness no one else in the household can muster. Where the doctors, wife, and colleagues recoil from the truth of death, Gerasim accepts it simply, holding his master's legs or carrying him without disgust. His plain, healthy presence becomes the one honest comfort in Ivan's final months, quietly measuring the distance between natural goodness and the elaborate self-deception of society.
