## Snapshot

A Siberian hermit whose majestic bearing, foreign tongues, and refusal to confess convince peasants he is the Tsar Alexander I in hiding.

## Who they are

Fedor Kusmich lives in ascetic retreat, praying, doing penance, and enduring rumors that he is a monarch who faked his own death to atone for a life of sin. His humility is genuine but his secrecy is absolute: he will not confess, will not reveal his name, and keeps only a single cryptic page of his former papers. The tension between his evident greatness and his chosen obscurity draws the curious to him, and his diary promises a reckoning with a past he calls the greatest of all crimes.
