# How does Lais develop the theme of Magic and Transformation?

> Lais by Marie de France

## Answer

Lais by Marie de France develops Magic and Transformation across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Supernatural elements, such as the talking doe in 'The Lay of Gugemar,' the werewolf in 'The Lay of the Werewolf,' and the hawk-to-knight transformation in 'The Lay of the Ash Tree,' shape the lovers' fates and symbolize the mysterious power of love.

Supernatural elements such as the prophetic doe, the werewolf Bisclavaret, and the fairy mistress in Launfal drive the plots and moral lessons.

The magical white doe with antlers and the mysterious ship that transports the lady are key magical elements.

The fairy mistress and her magical pavilion, the enchanted palfrey, and the final disappearance to Avalon all underscore the supernatural elements that transform Launfal's fate.
