## Who they are

Equitan is a puissant king who knows perfectly well that desiring his seneschal's wife is a betrayal of the trust that binds lord and vassal. He pursues her anyway, using a hunting trip as cover, and argues himself into the affair with sophistries about how no man can keep such treasure alone. The lady's cool, calculating response — she demands time to think — reveals she is his match in strategy, and the lay becomes a study in how two clever people destroy themselves together.
