Chapter 1
I
Sir Wilfrid Bury returns to London after five years in Teheran and visits Lady Henry Delafield's drawing-room, where he meets Mademoiselle Julie Le Breton, the hostess's companion. He observes her commanding presence and the deference she receives from guests, including the young Duchess. Later, at a Foreign Office party, he recognizes Julie's resemblance to a family connected to a past scandal, realizing her parentage.

In this chapter, Sir Wilfrid Bury listens to Lady Henry Delafield's account of Julie Le Breton's origins and her own growing resentment. Lady Henry reveals that Julie is the illegitimate daughter of Lady Rose and Marriott Dalrymple, raised in Bruges under the care of Madame Le Breton, and later brought to England under a fabricated identity. Later, at a dinner, Sir Wilfrid discusses Julie's influence with Mr. Montresor, and observes Lord Lackington's melancholy reaction to a mention of Bruges, connecting it to Lady Henry's story about Lady Rose.

Sir Wilfrid Bury and Jacob Delafield discuss Julie Le Breton's interest in Captain Warkworth, with Delafield defending her secrecy. Delafield reveals his charitable work, rescuing an old laborer from the workhouse. Sir Wilfrid reflects on Delafield's growth and his potential future as a duke. Later, at Lady Henry's Sunday gathering, Sir Wilfrid observes Julie's reaction to talk of Warkworth's possible mission, noting her blush.
