# Oliver Mellors — Lady Chatterley’s Lover character guide > Oliver Mellors in Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Mellors, the keeper, the man **First appearance:** 0005-vi ## Snapshot The gamekeeper at Wragby, a former soldier and blacksmith's son who has retreated to the woods to be free of women, masters, and the whole industrial mess. ## Who they are Mellors keeps the pheasants and lives alone in a cottage at the edge of the estate, speaking in Derbyshire dialect when it suits him and standard English when he wants to keep his distance. He is proud, touchy, and wounded by an earlier marriage, and he has deliberately made himself a man who needs nobody. His wary solitude is the thing the novel most wants to test — whether a man who has given up on tenderness can be brought back to it. ## Relationships ### [Constance Chatterley](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/constance_chatterley) _romantic_ Passionate, transformative love affair that transcends class boundaries and awakens Constance's physical and emotional self. ### [Clifford Chatterley](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/clifford_chatterley) _professional_ Employer and gamekeeper relationship marked by class tension and Clifford's unconscious jealousy. ### [Hilda](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/hilda) _social_ Skeptical, class-conscious acquaintance who eventually grudgingly accepts Mellors for Constance's sake. ### [Mrs. Bolton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/mrs_bolton) _professional_ Colleagues in service to Clifford, with Mrs. Bolton gossiping about and resenting Mellors' independence. ### [Michaelis](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/michaelis) _rivalry_ Mutual disdain and jealousy as both men have been involved with Constance, though Mellors ultimately wins her. ### [Sir Malcolm](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/sir_malcolm) _social_ Cautious, respectful acquaintance as Sir Malcolm assesses Mellors' suitability for his daughter. ### [Bertha Coutts](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/bertha_coutts) _family_ Bitter, estranged wife who returns to harass Mellors and expose their affair, representing his traumatic past. ### [Charles May](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/charles_may) _rivalry_ Hostile, class-based antagonism as a local miner who resents Mellors' position and relationship with Constance. ### [Constance Chatterley](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/constance_chatterley) _romantic_ Passionate, transformative love affair that transcends class boundaries and awakens Constance's physical and emotional self. ### [Constance Chatterley](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/constance_chatterley) _romantic_ Passionate, transformative love affair that transcends class boundaries and awakens Constance's physical and emotional self. ### [Clifford Chatterley](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/clifford_chatterley) _professional_ Employer and gamekeeper relationship marked by class tension and Clifford's unconscious jealousy. ### [Clifford Chatterley](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/characters/clifford_chatterley) _professional_ Employer and gamekeeper relationship marked by class tension and Clifford's unconscious jealousy. ## In the story ### [Chapter V](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/lady_chatterley_s_lover_se/chapters/v) Mellors is introduced as the new gamekeeper;
