# Mrs. Bolton — Lady Chatterley’s Lover character guide

> Mrs. Bolton in Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ivy Bolton

**First appearance:** 0007-viii

## Snapshot

Clifford's nurse-housekeeper, a Tevershall widow with a flamey zest for other people's private affairs and a savage contempt she keeps entirely to herself.

## Who they are

Mrs. Bolton came to Wragby to look after the paralyzed Clifford and has made herself indispensable, feeding him village gossip that he turns into fiction and taking a fierce pride in his success. She adores him and despises him at once — she calls him a squirming monster in her heart while she aids and abets him in everything. Her hold over Clifford, and her watchful suspicion of Connie, quietly reshapes the household in the middle of the book.
