# Bertha Coutts — Lady Chatterley’s Lover character guide

> Bertha Coutts in Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0010-xi

## Snapshot

Mellors' estranged wife, a woman of common stock and raw appetite whose memory haunts his account of marriage as a war of wills rather than a union.

## Who they are

Bertha comes from the same colliery world as Mellors, and he married her partly because she was common — unpretentious, physically direct, everything the 'pure' women of his earlier life were not. But the marriage curdled into mutual contempt and violence, and she lingers in his telling as the proof that desire without tenderness turns savage. Her shadow shapes how he approaches Connie: wary, hungry, and determined not to be owned again.
