Chapter 1
Kusamakura Unhuman Tour
The narrator begins his journey into the mountains, seeking an 'unhuman' perspective detached from worldly emotions. He reflects on the nature of art and the artist's role, observing the landscape and arriving at a tea stall before continuing to the Shiota hot spring hotel.
Chapter 2
I
The narrator ascends a mountain while reflecting on the nature of art, poetry, and the human condition. He contemplates the role of the artist in transforming life's disagreeableness into beauty, and resolves to adopt an unhuman, aesthetic perspective toward the world. His thoughts are interrupted by a fall, and he continues through rain, encountering a packhorse driver and seeking shelter.
Chapter 3

The narrator continues his journey and stops at a mountain tea stall, where he converses with the old woman (Oba-san) and later with Gen-san. He hears the tragic tale of the Jo-sama of Nakoi and the legend of Nagarano Otome, a woman who drowned herself over a love dilemma. The narrator sketches and writes haiku, but becomes uneasy as the stories bring him back to human concerns, threatening his 'unhuman' detachment.
Chapter 4
III
The narrator, after a restless night in his mountain inn, reflects on the enigmatic woman he met and his own artistic ideals. He dreams a chaotic, literary dream blending Nagarano Otome, Ophelia, and folk figures, then wakes to hear a faint, haunting chant of the Nagarano Otome's song. He steps out into the moonlight, sees a shadowy figure, and later composes haiku to regain his composure and prove his 'unhuman' artistic detachment.

The narrator wakes to find his room tidied and discovers mysterious corrections to his haiku. He explores the garden and geography of Nakoi, then has a conversation with Nami about the legend of Nagarano Otome, where she expresses a pragmatic view of love and survival.
