# Sir Henry Curtis — King Solomon’s Mines character guide > Sir Henry Curtis in King Solomon’s Mines by H. Rider Haggard. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Harry, Henry, Curtis, Henry Curtis **First appearance:** 0004-i-i-meet-sir-henry-curtis ## Snapshot A golden-bearded English baronet who funds an expedition into unmapped Africa on the slim hope of finding the brother who vanished chasing Solomon's mines. ## Who they are Sir Henry Curtis is a gentleman of enormous physical strength and equally enormous loyalty, bankrolling the journey because his younger brother George rode off after the mines and never came back. Where Quatermain counts risks and Good cracks jokes, Curtis carries a quiet, almost grim determination that steadies the party when the trail goes cold. His search gives the expedition its emotional spine, and his willingness to trust a mysterious stranger named Umbopa sets the whole Kukuana adventure in motion. ## Relationships ### [Allan Quatermain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/allan_quatermain) _friendship_ Loyal friends and fellow hunters who share a deep mutual respect and trust. ### [Twala](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/twala) _rivalry_ Sir Henry fights against the tyrannical King Twala in support of Ignosi's claim. ### [Ignosi](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/ignosi) _friendship_ Ignosi and Sir Henry form a strong bond of brotherhood and alliance during the struggle for the throne. ### [Infadoos](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/infadoos) _friendship_ Infadoos respects Sir Henry as a powerful warrior and ally in restoring Ignosi to the throne. ### [George Curtis](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/george_curtis) _family_ George is Sir Henry's younger brother, whose disappearance prompts the entire adventure. ### [Neville](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/neville) _professional_ Neville serves as a guide or helper to Sir Henry during the journey. ### [Allan Quatermain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/allan_quatermain) _friendship_ Loyal friends and fellow hunters who share a deep mutual respect and trust. ### [Neville](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/neville) _professional_ Neville serves as a guide or helper to Sir Henry during the journey. ### [Allan Quatermain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/allan_quatermain) _friendship_ Loyal friends and fellow hunters who share a deep mutual respect and trust. ### [George Curtis](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/george_curtis) _family_ George is Sir Henry's younger brother, whose disappearance prompts the entire adventure. ### [Ignosi](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/ignosi) _friendship_ Ignosi and Sir Henry form a strong bond of brotherhood and alliance during the struggle for the throne. ### [Ignosi](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/characters/ignosi) _friendship_ Ignosi and Sir Henry form a strong bond of brotherhood and alliance during the struggle for the throne. ## In the story ### [King Solomon's Mines](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/chapters/king-solomon-s-mines) Aristocrat seeking his lost brother; initiates the quest. ### [I Meet Sir Henry Curtis](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/chapters/i-i-meet-sir-henry-curtis) A large, yellow-haired, grey-eyed gentleman of Danish descent, who seeks news of his lost brother Neville and recognizes Quatermain from his reputation. ### [II: The Legend of Solomon’s Mines](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/chapters/ii-the-legend-of-solomon-s-mines) Eagerly listens to the legend and proposes a well-funded expedition to find his brother. ### [III: Umbopa Enters Our Service](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/chapters/iii-umbopa-enters-our-service) Employer of the expedition; hires Umbopa as his servant after being impressed by his stature and demeanor. ### [IV: An Elephant Hunt](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/chapters/iv-an-elephant-hunt) Eager to hunt elephants; participates in the hunt and witnesses Khiva's death. ### [Our March Into the Desert](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/king_solomon_s_mines_se/chapters/v-our-march-into-the-desert) Determined to cross the desert to find his brother; engages in philosophical dialogue with Umbopa and shows quiet confidence. ### [VI: Water!
